According to Wang Guohai, in order to enable the wind turbine to operate at a high wind speed, a tower made of wide and thick plates is needed to support the wind turbine. Among the wind power steel, the steel consumption of the tower is the largest. The total steel consumption of a 1.5MW wind turbine is about 170 tons, of which the steel consumption of the tower is about 120 tons, accounting for up to 70%. Not only that, because wind power tower is subject to high temperature, extreme cold, sandstorm and other severe weather tests all year round, the steel used for wind power tower has strict requirements for welding performance, mechanical structure, low-temperature impact toughness and other properties, which is difficult for ordinary thick plate manufacturers to meet.

During the interview, Wang Guohai mentioned to the reporter of China Metallurgical Daily an important equipment in the field of wind power - a direct drive permanent magnet wind generator with NdFeB as the core material. "The direct driven permanent magnet wind turbine adopts the fan impeller to directly drive the generator to rotate, eliminating the speed increase gearbox required by the traditional AC excitation doubly fed asynchronous wind turbine, and avoiding the gearbox failure and maintenance during operation." Wang Guohai further explained that, "As the direct drive permanent magnet wind turbine is made of rare earth NdFeB permanent magnet, it has the advantages of non excitation winding, simple structure, reliable operation, high power quality, less harmonic components, and strong low voltage ride through capability, which can improve the operation quality and reliability of the power grid. It is very suitable for promotion in such sparsely populated and heavily sandstorm areas as Inner Mongolia."
As the leader of China's rare earth industry, Baotou Steel North Rare Earth has formed the industrial layout of high-performance NdFeB magnetic materials in Beijing, Inner Mongolia, Zhejiang and other places relying on a series of industrial layout, becoming the largest supplier of high-performance NdFeB magnetic materials in China and even in the world. In the first half of this year, Baotou Steel continued to increase the sales of onshore wind power steel containing rare earths. 438300 tons of onshore wind power steel products were sold to various regions, an increase of 128000 tons year-on-year. In June this year, Baotou Steel's onshore wind power steel containing rare earth increased its efficiency by 8.1 million yuan in a single month, and the cumulative efficiency in the first half of the year reached 29.3475 million yuan. Based on high-quality products and strict delivery time, Baotou Steel's onshore key users of wind power steel products have been consolidated, and the partnership has become more stable. In the first half of the year, the purchase and sales of wind power steel for key projects and leading enterprises accounted for 59.16%. Baotou Steel will also continue to increase its visits to key sales regions and key users, deepen cooperation, enhance user stickiness, improve variety efficiency, and satisfy users with quality services and empower brands.
